The ‘Blow Moulding’ Revolution

A group of scientists at the famous Yale University are claiming that they may be on the verge of revolutionising the metals and sheet metal production industry with a new product.

The team have created something called bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) which they claim have a completely random atomic structure and can be softened and shaped at low temperatures, thus allowing for blow moulding. This will allow for metals to be shaped in much the same way that plastics are.

The Yale based scientists have produced a number of complex designs in this manner, including watch cases, bottles and biomedical implants.

BMGs is created using a combination of different metals, including zirconium, nickel, copper and titanium. It can be moulded in a matter of seconds, which is being touted as being much quicker and cost effective than traditional methods.

Only time will tell if it becomes the standard for the metal industry.
